About 6-7 years ago I went to a talk by Jan Gehl, a Danish architect and one of the worlds most recognised urban designers. He had been brought to Wellington by the city council. He spent a lot of time analysising the city and produced a report:

Just before Christmas the organising committee for the next NZ Cycling Conference agreed it was time to seriously consider holding a joint walking and cycling conference. This would replace the biennial cycling conference earmarked for late 2011. Discussions were held with Living Streets Aotearoa (organisers of the NZ Walking Conference series) and agreement in principle was reached on this concept.

Hawke's Bay has claimed the title "Cycling Capital of New Zealand" as bike fever takes hold of the region.
Annie Dundas, General Manager Hawke's Bay Tourism, says Hawke's Bay is better positioned than any other region in New Zealand to capitalise on the ‘cycling boom' that is taking off.

Police are investigating what they believe is the suspicious death of a cyclist in Auckland early this morning.
The man was found on the cycleway near Bond Street, Kingsland, beside the Northwestern motorway at around 1am.
Ambulance staff were unable to save him and he died at the scene, police said.
Bond Street was closed off for several hours and a major scene investigation launched.
An autopsy will be held this morning.
Police were yet to determine how the man died.

A cyclist was fatally injured last night when he was hit by a car in Canterbury.
The accident happened in High St, Leeston, 43km southwest of Christchurch, about 8.40pm.
The victim, a 40-year-old local man, died at the scene.

A cyclist is dead after a head-on collision with a car in Karori last night.
Police and the serious crash team are investigating the fatal crash that occurred about 11pm.
Police said the man was travelling down Makara Road and collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction.
The cyclist died at the scene from injuries received.
His details will be released once police have notified the next of kin.
