Bluff to Cape Reinga by BikeWellington endurance athlete Thomas Lindup aims to write his name in the record books with a solo bike ride the length of New Zealand. On 2nd of March, he will start what will be the first unsupported record attempt for the length of New Zealand by bike, a distance of 2,170 km.Past records have been set with support from teams of helpers, campervans, and a helicopter over Cook Strait. The supported record is 4 days 16 hours and 40 minutes, set by Fielding postie Colin Anderson in 2007.Mr Lindup says he aims to create a more realistic record, while trying to make New Zealand roads a safer place for biking."I've dreamed of cycling the length of New Zealand since I was at college. I love biking, and this is the longest ride I could think of."He will raise awareness for the Cycling Advocates' Network (CAN) and its Share the Road campaign.CAN...

Invest in cycling as fuel prices rise, say cyclists. The Cycling Advocates' Network (CAN) and Bike NZ say it has never been more urgent for government and business to invest in cycling. As petrol crosses the $2.20 mark more people are looking for alternatives to driving.CAN spokesperson Patrick Morgan says the New Zealand Cycle Trails is an excellent start, but local councils and central government need to shift up a gear to soften the impacts of high fuel prices."We urge councils to meet the demand for safe and convenient cycling by developing cycling plans and investing in cycleways, traffic reduction, bike parking, cyclist training and driver education through the 2012 updates to their Long-Term Council Community Plans."Mr Morgan says business can play a part too."Some workplaces provide secure bike parking, fleet bikes, and changing facilities for staff. These are...

From Mark at Sport Wellington:My organisation, Sport Wellington, is running the “AMI Round the Bays” run/walk which includes the New Balance Half Marathon.Around 10,000 people will be there for Wellington’s largest participation event. As a fellow cyclist we need to be aware of road closures from 8.00am to 11.30am.Previously, some cyclists have tried to cycle the course and have given the marshals a bit of grief. This is not cool. Remember the marshals are volunteers, just like you and I who marshal for our cycle races. The police and transport agencies have sanctioned this event. Please do not attempt to ride along any part of route during road closures as you will be denied access. Closures include Cobham Drive. Closures are necessary for the safety of participants. King Kapisi will be playing at Kilbirnie Park after the event – feel free to come down and soak up the atmosphere....

About 6-7 years ago I went to a talk by Jan Gehl, a Danish architect and one of the worlds most recognised urban designers. He had been brought to Wellington by the city council. He spent a lot of time analysising the city and produced a report:http://www.wellington.govt.nz/services/urban/citytowaterfront/gehlreportindex.html .  The big point of the talk that the city was disconnected from the waterfront by  Jervios Quay. This was not rocket science but I really liked his solution. It was not to have more bridges as had been proposed in the past but to reduce Jervios from three to two lanes to change what he called urban mini-motorways into city boulevards. He also suggested this for Kent and Cambridge Terrace. Only then could Jervois be a place for people and yes, bicycles. It was a beatifully simple idea that solved multiple problems but the council did not accept it. Instead they...

Just before Christmas the organising committee for the next NZ Cycling Conference agreed it was time to seriously consider holding a joint walking and cycling conference. This would replace the biennial cycling conference earmarked for late 2011. Discussions were held with Living Streets Aotearoa (organisers of the NZ Walking Conference series) and agreement in principle was reached on this concept. The proposed joint event would be called the NZ Walking and Cycling Conference and the intention is to hold it in late February or early March 2012. Representatives from LSA have joined the conference organising committee to help plan the event. Those who have been involved in past NZ walking and cycling conferences will know that this joint concept has come up regularly over the years. The arguments for and against still hold. On the one hand, it provides a great opportunity to attract a...

"LifeCycle" is a bicycle ride from Whangarei to Wellington, organised by CAN member Dean Scanlen, that will take place from the 17th to the 30th of April and finish at a rally on the steps of Parliament. It will pass many locations in which people have been killed while cycling. The aims of this ride are:* To pay our respects to people who have been killed while cycling on our roads. * To achieve big improvements in attitudes about, and behaviour towards, cyclists by motorists. * To promote stronger and more effective driver licensing procedures. * To persuade the Government to spend 10% of its roading budget on cycle safety measures. We are keen that there be a similar ride in the South Island at the same time. If anyone is keen to lead such a ride, please contact Dean Scanlen on e-mail: dean@e-outcomes.co.nz. We would also like to use a HelmetCam on the ride. If anyone has one that we...
