Transport Expert (& Cyclist) to stand for Greens

Transport expert to stand for Greens Transport and urban planning expert Julie Anne Genter has been selected as the Green Party candidate for the Mt Roskill electorate in the 2011 general election.

“Transport is the biggest issue facing Auckland. I’m standing for the Greens because they are the only party with the practical, evidence-based policies that will deliver us a world class city with a 21st century transport system,” said Ms Genter.

Ms Genter was born in the United States and graduated with highest honours from UC Berkeley. At the University of Auckland she earned a Masters of Planning Practice with first class honours, and has since worked as a consultant undertaking ground-breaking research in transport and urban economics and advising central and local government in New Zealand and overseas.

“Mt Roskill has one of the highest percentages of overseas born residents in the country. As an immigrant myself, I love Auckland and I understand what it’s like to want to protect this beautiful place we now call home,” said Ms Genter. “We have an incredible opportunity to create healthier and safer communities with smarter planning – all we need is leadership.

“Aucklanders don’t have enough transport choices, and this has a dire impact on the national economy. I’ve commuted by bicycle for many years and know what a challenge it can be.

“The new Super City Council has a great vision to make Auckland more vibrant and reduce congestion by making it easier to walk, cycle, and take buses or trains. Unfortunately, the Key Government is going the opposite direction and squandering billions of dollars on motorways that will not ease congestion or reduce our dependence on oil.

“We need more people in Parliament who have the knowledge to solve Auckland’s transport woes and create a sustainable economy.

“The Greens have an amazing line up of smart and passionate candidates for this year’s election, and I am proud to be working with them to get more than 10 percent of the party vote this year,” said Ms Genter.
