Policy Statement:

A nationwide expansion in separated cycling infrastructure is underway. People riding their bikes on these facilities will interact with each other and with people walking; people using their bikes for everyday cycling will almost inevitably continue to share the road space with motor vehicle drivers. People cycling, walking and driving need to see each other as individual people and consider each others' viewpoints. Any substantive improvement in the safety of people driving, cycling or walking requires attitudinal change on the part of all involved, by following...

Nelson is set to become a destination for some of the country's - and the world's - top walking and cycling experts and advocates later this month, as it plays host to New Zealand's second 2WALKandCYCLE Conference.

Uli Neumann, Conference Co-Convenor, says the organisers are delighted to be holding 2WALKandCYCLE 2014 in Nelson. Running from 29 to 31 October, 2WALKandCYCLE promotes walking and cycling for everyday transport, recreation and tourism.

Uli says Nelson is seen by many as the walking and cycling capital of New Zealand and will provide a stimulating and ideal setting...

Action needed on cycling safety

Cycling advocates are calling for Government action, following a fatal crash in Christchurch today.

"Clearly we aren't doing enough to protect the 1.5 million New Zealanders who ride bikes," said Mr Morgan.

"We want the Government to commit to taking quick action on the Cycling Safety Panel's report, due in November."

The Cycling Safety Panel last week released their draft report for feedback (http://www.nzta.govt.nz/consultation/cycling-safety-panel/) and that includes draft recommendations for trucks..

The $300 million investment in cycling announced today by Greens co-leader Russel Norman pays a triple dividend, says CAN spokesperson Patrick Morgan.

"It improves our health, reduces road congestion and gives people more transport choices."
"Better cycling is great news whether you ride a bike or not."
"With obesity threatening to overwhelm our health system, investing in cycling is a smart move."
Mr Morgan says there's strong public support from the 1.5 million New Zealanders who ride bikes.
"We've invested more than $100 million in the New Zealand Cycle Trails...

News release from Cycle Aware Wellington

Greens' transport plan a game-changer for Wellington
Cycling advocates have welcomed a new plan from the Green Party to address Wellington's transport issues.

"This policy raises the bar for cycling in Wellington," said James Burgess, Chairman of Cycle Aware Wellington.

"$80m over five years on cycleways would be a game-changer in meeting high public demand."

Since the 2006 Census, cycling in Wellington has grown by 73 percent, despite no significant spending.

"The plan's integrated...

Sign here to ask Govt to triple cycling funding

I would like to see the walking and cycling budget in the 2015 Government Policy Statement on land transport increased from $15-30 million per year to $45-90 million per year for the next 3 years with progressive increases after that. This is a small increase relative to the total budget of $3.5 billion per year, but would start to make a real difference for cycling. The NZ Transport Agency should take an active leadership role in improving cycling, and should help kickstart local councils by funding more than the usual amount for...

Cyclists want answers from political parties

Cyclists are calling for better protection, following the Coroner's inquest into the death of Jane Farrelly, held in Hamilton this week.

Mrs Farrelly was killed after being struck by a truck near Taupo on March 16 last year.

Cycling Advocates Network spokesman Patrick Morgan said many people are angry, and want to know what the Government will do to protect them.

Coverage of the Coroner's inquest into Jane Farrelly's death is disturbing, he said.

"The Police investigator is reported as saying...

1.5 million New Zealanders ride bikes, but less than 0.5 percent of the transport budget goes on cycling.
We are missing out on compelling benefits for the whole community:
- better health
- cheap transport
- less traffic congestion
- prosperous business
- safer streets
- cleaner air
- popular
- fun
We need protected cycle lanes on busy roads, safer speeds, and better training for drivers and those on bikes.
When more people cycle more often, we all win.

Cycle Aware Wellington is a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation aimed at improving conditions for cyclists and encouraging more people to bike more often. We advocate for people who use their bikes for transport and recreation. Since 1994, we have worked constructively with councils, government, business and the community on a wide variety of cycling projects. We represent 600 members and supporters, and the 70,000 Wellingtonians who ride bikes.

Many people have questions about the planned cycleway. Here's some responses.

Situation Vacant - Project Based Work

The Road User Workshop programme is a programme designed to educate cyclists and professional drivers about sharing the road with each other. The programme, developed and delivered by the Cycling Advocates' Network in cooperation with BikeNZ, is currently funded by the Road Safety Trust and overseen by NZTA. Working alongside other road users including representatives from the transport industry, the programme aims to make New Zealand roads a safer and more pleasant environment for all road users.

It's a huge day for Wellington: am thrilled that our city council today unanimously approved the cycling budget of $4.3m. (For context, total transport budget is $69m).

This is a win for all of us - whether you ride a bike or not. Less congestion, less pressure on parking. More fun. More choices. Safer streets. More smiles.

Big thanks to everyone who worked over the past decade to get us here. Chapeau!

CAN arranged a series of actions to protect the 1.5 million NZers on bikes. We are calling on all political parties to pledge to act on the Cycling Expert Safety Panel's report, due in Sept. Their first meeting was Tuesday 15 April.
These rides celebrate the lives of those people lost to us while cycling and to push for change to ensure these deaths stop.
