Sign here to ask Govt to triple cycling funding

I would like to see the walking and cycling budget in the 2015 Government Policy Statement on land transport increased from $15-30 million per year to $45-90 million per year for the next 3 years with progressive increases after that. This is a small increase relative to the total budget of $3.5 billion per year, but would start to make a real difference for cycling. The NZ Transport Agency should take an active leadership role in improving cycling, and should help kickstart local councils by funding more than the usual amount for...

Cyclists want answers from political parties

Cyclists are calling for better protection, following the Coroner's inquest into the death of Jane Farrelly, held in Hamilton this week.

Mrs Farrelly was killed after being struck by a truck near Taupo on March 16 last year.

Cycling Advocates Network spokesman Patrick Morgan said many people are angry, and want to know what the Government will do to protect them.

Coverage of the Coroner's inquest into Jane Farrelly's death is disturbing, he said.

"The Police investigator is reported as saying...

1.5 million New Zealanders ride bikes, but less than 0.5 percent of the transport budget goes on cycling.
We are missing out on compelling benefits for the whole community:
- better health
- cheap transport
- less traffic congestion
- prosperous business
- safer streets
- cleaner air
- popular
- fun
We need protected cycle lanes on busy roads, safer speeds, and better training for drivers and those on bikes.
When more people cycle more often, we all win.

Cycle Aware Wellington is a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation aimed at improving conditions for cyclists and encouraging more people to bike more often. We advocate for people who use their bikes for transport and recreation. Since 1994, we have worked constructively with councils, government, business and the community on a wide variety of cycling projects. We represent 600 members and supporters, and the 70,000 Wellingtonians who ride bikes.

Many people have questions about the planned cycleway. Here's some responses.

What's the plan?...

Situation Vacant - Project Based Work

The Road User Workshop programme is a programme designed to educate cyclists and professional drivers about sharing the road with each other. The programme, developed and delivered by the Cycling Advocates' Network in cooperation with BikeNZ, is currently funded by the Road Safety Trust and overseen by NZTA. Working alongside other road users including representatives from the transport industry, the programme aims to make New Zealand roads a safer and more pleasant environment for all road users.

The CAN-managed project requires a project...

It's a huge day for Wellington: am thrilled that our city council today unanimously approved the cycling budget of $4.3m. (For context, total transport budget is $69m).

This is a win for all of us - whether you ride a bike or not. Less congestion, less pressure on parking. More fun. More choices. Safer streets. More smiles.

Big thanks to everyone who worked over the past decade to get us here. Chapeau!

Hutt City Council has released it's annual plan - with no change to the level of cycle funding.

At our last meeting a number of people offered to make submissions. Would you all consider doing so? This is a numbers game.

Making a submission is easy - see http://www.huttcity.govt.nz/annualplan and go down to "tell us what you think". You have to create and verify an account. There's a survey which you can complete or not as you wish. Typing only a couple of sentences in the "any other comments" box is what we're after.

Even easier: email your...

News release from Cycling Advocates Network and BikeNZ

Politicians can no longer ignore cycle safety

Following recent cycling deaths, cyclists will rally at Parliament on Tuesday 15 April.

Cycling Advocates Network spokesman Patrick Morgan says many people are angry after the deaths.

Student nurse Sharla Haerewa was riding in a Christchurch cycle lane, had lights and high vis.

Teacher Jocelyn Goodwin was riding in a Palmerston North cycle lane on a training ride.

"Clearly we aren't doing enough to protect the 1.5 million New Zealanders...

Members of Cycle Aware Manawatu were devastated to hear of the death of Jocelyn Goodwin, a local cyclist who is well known and respected in the Palmerston North community and beyond. Our thoughts are with her family and everyone involved and affected by the tragedy.

We would like to encourage all drivers and cyclists to be aware of one another and road conditions to ensure the safety of all road users.

This tragedy is an unfortunate reminder that we all need to do much more to protect people on bikes. The road concerned recently had its speed limit reduced from...

Cyclists need to make sure they are well lit as daylight saving ends, say the Cycling Advocates Network.

But those using super-bright LED lights should avoid dazzling other road users.

"Flashing super-bright bike lights can be a distraction, so keep them aimed low," says CAN spokesperson Patrick Morgan.

The end of daylight saving on Sunday 6 April means it's time for cyclists to check their lights and batteries, says Mr Morgan.

"Some may be caught out by earlier evening twilight, so we all need to be extra careful."

"Cycling offers the ultimate trip: it's a...
