News release: Cyclists delighted with Thorndon Quay safety improvements

22 April 2010
Wellington cyclists are giving a big thumbs up to the City Council, who today voted to improve safety on Thorndon Quay.

The Council will make Thorndon Quay a clearway from 7-9am on in the city(south)-bound direction.

Cycle Aware Wellington member Patrick Morgan says improving Thorndon Quay has been the top safety priority for cyclists.

“Removing parking from 7-9am has little impact on retailers but makes this busy road safer for the 400 people on bikes who use this route.”

Otaki Bridge Speed limit reduction

Well, we won partly in that NZTA has agreed to reduce the speed limit on the bridge itself to 70 km per hour.

We asked that the speed limit be reduced to 70 per hour from before the Gorge Road. We are not giving in yet - see attachment with our submission.

Our gathering at the bridge was also a demand for off-road connection between Otaki and Te Horo to connect Otaki to the rest of the district. NZTA has produced beautiful (yes beautiful) plans with costing for this. The fly in the ointment is that they demand our council pays a share.

*CAN Annual Report 2009 questionnaire for Local Groups*

CAN is writing its Annual Report for the year from 1 July 2008 – 30 June
2009, and we need your help.
We have a contract with NZTA which includes these outcomes:
- strengthen the existing cycling group network, in particular the smaller groups.
- maintain personal contact between CAN and each group by verbal and/or in person for the purpose of information sharing, capacity building and
guidance on strategic planning.
- facilitate and encourage systems and processes that enhance national and local capability to contribute to transport planning processes
We need to tell NZTA how we are doing.
The key things they want to know are:
- How have CAN and cycling advocacy groups made a positive difference?
- What cycling projects have advanced as a result of our work?
- Why do we merit continued funding?
*Please help by answering these questions and send to patrick@can.org.nz
