On conclusion of the conference, we hope you'll join us for a short bike camping expedition into the southern Waikato. We'll depart Hamilton for the Avantidrome (hopefully for a tour of the place!) just outside Cambridge, before proceeding along the Te Awa river ride to Karapiro, where you'll have the choice of sleeping in your tent or booking a cabin.

The next day we'll continue up the river at a leisurely pace, taking in Maungatautari Ecological Reserve. Then on to the Waikato river trail, which covers about 100 km of previously inaccessible Southern Waikato land, Jim Barnett Reserve, and the hydroelectric facilities along the Waikato River (subject to interest), before taking our rest at Mangakino's lakeside camping ground.

Ride Outline:

  • CAN AGM concludes 2pm Sunday 20th;
  • Visit Cambridge ‘Avantidrome’ later that afternoon (TBC);
  • Bike onward (<20km) to Lake Karapiro;
  • Stay Lake Karapiro Sunday night 20th.
  • Bike Waikato River Trail to Mangakino on Monday 21st.  (some may take road route via Waipapa Road between Arapuni and Mangakino)
  • Ride breaks up Tuesday 22nd

From Mangakino, some options for returning home are:
* Cycling back to Hamilton from which to return home by the way you arrived
* Flying home from Rotorua
* Bus, train or shuttle (subject to prior arrangement)

Alternatively, those who wish to continue exploring the region on two wheels will of course be free to do so. Some are planning to continue south to Whakamaru.

Please note this is a self-funded trip. We are gathering quotes of expected costs and will add them to this page.

Karapiro Mighty River Domain has camping and chalets. Alastair <agsmith37@gmail.com> has booked a chalet for 8 people at $28/px. Let him know if you want to stay in the Chalet.

Lake Maraetai Camping Reserve has free camping for up to two nights.

Maraetai Lodge, Mangakino: dorms, single and double rooms from $40. If booking in the dorm, mention that you are part of the CAN party.
