Victoria St
Discussion of WCC $11M plans to make Victoria St, between Dixon St and Abel Smith St, a more pleasant place to be, particularly for apartment dwellers.
There has been very rapid consultation, some cycle provision proposed. The Memorial Park Alliance taking on. Decisions on road width made at this point will determine options for cycle lanes, since shifting curbs is expensive. Mid block cycle lanes have been proposed, but need approach lanes.
Johnsonville:
James reported on community consultation on the Johnsonville Triangle Project. Local business groups are vetoing proposed cycle lanes to be created by narrowing the median strip. Proposed 30km/hr limit. This a "gap" in the cycle route north from Wellington. Example of need for cycling to be incorporated in planning as suggested by the Cycling Safety expert panel report. A shared path to Onslow College has been proposed, and is meeting little opposition.
Appointments at NZTA .
A national cycling manager (Dougal List) has been appointed, plus 3 roles in cycle planning have been advertised.
Cycling Safety Panel draft report
Discussion of the draft report. A feeling that it could be bolder.
No recommendation on mandataory helmets - infrastructure not ready yet.
Recommends minimum passing distances, should also clarify that vehicles can cross centre line to pass a slow vehicle such as a bike.
Eleanor will prepare a CAW submission.
Membership
There has been a query from CAN about whether CAW is paying the appropriate amount per member to the national body. Keep as is. Phaedra, Alastair, Adrian to talk.
Roll on Wellington awards
These will be presented at the December meeting. Change categories? Brian and Sean volunteer.
Basin Reserve
Paul Bruce has suggested interested organisations such as CAW should send letters to NZTA/GWRC/WCC asking to be involved in future decisions. Good idea. Alastair will send letter.
Island Bay to CBD cycleway stage 2.
Ron talked about his involvement on the citizens panel. Good quality presentations. CAW set up criteria which was useful. to rule out some more ambitious options. Project will concentrate on creating a backbone for the wider cycle network.
