Cyclist killed in Canterbury

A cyclist was fatally injured last night when he was hit by a car in Canterbury.

The accident happened in High St, Leeston, 43km southwest of Christchurch, about 8.40pm.

The victim, a 40-year-old local man, died at the scene.

Police have released the name of the man killed in a crash in, Leeston, near Christchurch, yesterday evening.

He was Nigel Graham Townley, aged 40, of Leeston.

Police said initial investigations into the incident indicate the man was not cycling at the time he was hit by a vehicle.

It is believed he was on the roadway at the time of the crash, and was not wearing a cycle helmet or high-visibility clothing.

Police have spoken to the driver of the vehicle involved, and investigations into the incident are continuing.
