The much anticipated funding process for Phase Two of the New Zealand Cycleway project was announced today by the Ministry of Tourism.

General Manager, Ray Salter, says there are three stages to this process with consideration of the merits of each proposal being assessed at each stage before moving to the next. They are:

  • Stage one: Concept Proposal
  • Stage two: Feasibility study and
  • Stage three: Business Case.

Here are the key dates...

18 December 2009: Closing date for applicants to submit concept proposals to the Ministry;
1 February 2010: Applicants notified whether the proposal will proceed to stage two (feasibility study);
31 May 2010: Feasibility studies completed;
30 June 2010: Proposals to proceed to stage three (business case) notified;
30 September 2010: Business cases completed; and
October 2010: Approved cycleways confirmed for detailed design and construction funding (subject to any conditions of funding).

You have to use their template for the concept proposal, which is provided as a Word doc at the above website - but it is locked to prevent editing. You can simply paste and copy the whole thing into a new Word document so you can edit it.

When I download the Word document, it's not locked, but you can edit the cells where information needs to be provided. I'm using Word 2007.

The Ministry’s Cycle Trail team will be visiting the regions in November to provide advice and assist applicants intending to submit a proposal under Phase Two of the Cycle Trail Project.

The dates and venues for the meetings are:

· Rotorua – 11 November

· Whangarei – 12 November

· Wellington – 16 November

· Christchurch – 18 November

· Alexandra – 19 November

Registrations must be received no later than Thursday, 5 November.

If you cannot attend one of these venues or the date is not convenient, please let us know and we may be able to make an alternate arrangement.

The meetings will be an opportunity for applicants to hear from the Cycle Trail Programme Manager, John Dunn, about how the Phase Two funding process will work. They are also an opportunity for applicants to ask questions and, if necessary, have an individual appointment with the Cycle Trail members.
