I need a cover for my bicycle basket as my shopping keeps jumping out when I go over a particular man-hole cover in Queen Street that is literally 'a pain in the bum'.
See http://aucklandcyclechic.blogspot.com/2009/04/stunt-riding-required-on-q...
I don't know if there is such a contraption or whether I will need to bring all of my Kiwi ingenuity into play and create something with no.8 wire, or more practically, with elasticated cord and fabric.
Does anyone have any ideas or inventions of their own?

I haven't heard of such a device- might be a little niche market there with your name on it...
BTW, re the pothole on Queen St, not sure if you are already aware that you can report these things directly to the Council and ask them to fix them:

I've had good luck with this in the past... once I even asked them to remove parking on one side of a street (Bond St, over the bridge) and lo & behold they actually did it.

Hi Unity
Unity -fantastic BLOG!!!
-what an amazing advocate you are for riding a bike -riding gorgeous bikes-having fun on bikes-normalizing cycling -bringing back images of when cycling was a major transport mode-for up to date lobbying for better cycling facilities on auckland streets -with powerful use of visuals -your site is attractive, colourful, easy to navigate-hard to leave without checking out every juicy link!!
between you and handlebras you are a huge advocacy force -
I have sent it on to my council contacts and others.
you have covered as much in your blog as Cycle Action tries to achieve in a year!!
You deserve an award.
Looked at all your useful links -all the NZ advocacy groups should highlight links to your sites on their websites (so much more relevant than the international ones).
Frocktober would go down well in Ponsonby, Newmarket and Queen St don't you think!
cheers

Thanks so much Barb for your kind comments and also for sending my link to to your contacts. I would definitely be a supporter of Frocktober in Auckland city - a shopping opportunity and a cycle ride! Keep me in the loop if you get any info about such an event.

Hi Unity,
How about using one of those nice brightly-coloured CAN backpack covers? Water-proof, too .... doesn't it rain lots up in Auckland?
Cheers,

Thanks for the idea Jane - it might just be the very thing. However, you have been misinformed about the weather ... rain ... in Auckland ... never!
I read a post recently that said "there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing".
Basket covers
Well, it turns out they do exist after all:
