From Manhattan's Summer Streets to Bogota's Ciclovia, TreeHugger is a big fan of reclaiming asphalt in favor of human interaction. But I'm not sure we've ever seen anything on this scale. A town in Germany recently shut down an entire section of Autobahn—that's right, the famous German highways with no speed limit—in order to hold a gigantic party for upwards of 3 million people! But what was it all for?
On Sunday, June 27th, Downtown Oakland opened two miles of its streets to fun and activities—zumba dancing, circus arts, BMX bike competitions and performances from local musicians.
Nice idea…and why not? We could start for a few hours on a Sunday morning once a month…I joined a ‘Bike the Bays’ ride some years ago and it was quite incredible to be able to ride along this road when it was car free. And reading The Banksie Bulletin you would have to think we have a strong supporter for this proposition.
