Wellington City Council Long Term Plan:
Submit online at: http://www.wellington.govt.nz/haveyoursay/publicinput/2012-05-longterm.html
Due 5pm, May 18
Main points:
- Support WCC's recognition that cycling is a key part of the network, and offers a solution to most of the transport challenges the city faces.
- The proposed investment in cycling however, will not be sufficient to improve the level of service for most around the city or to achieve the council's cycle safety goals.
- While Cycle Aware Wellington supports the Tawa Stream Path, it should not be the only major improvement to the network undertaken in the next three years as it will not affect the majority of cyclists in the city.
- Prioritising road-space for cyclists over on-street parking on key arterial routes is a low-cost way to improve cycle safety.
- Improved cycle facilities are urgently needed on the Island Bay to CBD route (including Adelaide Rd), Jervois Quay and the Hutt Rd shared path.
- A dedicated bicycle coordinator position would help the council gain traction in this area, find low-cost wins by collaborating with other
areas of council (ie, the road resealing programme) and liaise with the community
- Lower speeds are another low-cost way to improve the safety of all road users, especially cyclists.
