SW Meeting Minutes Tuesday September 2nd 08 (5.30-7pm)

1. Bike Stands
Q) Where are we at with response from TDC?
-Jon sent letter to TDC Staff (Andrew, Simon, and Daniel)
-TDC discussed this and will investigate installing Sheffield Bike Stands [cost estimate based on CCC: $10,000 for 100 bikes (50 stands) = $200/stand]
-SW suggested numbers of initial stands (when demand increases so can the number provided!) and placings:

TDC Council Chambers: 5 stands (10 bikes) out front (e.g. ECan-has 3 & CHCH CC has heaps out front)

Library: 3 stands (20 bikes) out front (leave old bike stand at back for extra capacity)

Farmers Carpark: 5 stands at top of stairs, carparking committee has meetings

2. TDC Fleet Bike
-Timaru Herald article (~ 6 weeks ago) re TDC Fleet Bikes, Ashley Harper (TDC District Services Manager) made a comment these were not appropriate as Timaru was too hilly for cycling, ineffective use of staff time, and helmet issue.

Fiona to provide information to SW re Councils & public orgs with Fleet bikes (ECan, Nelson CC, CPH in CHCH, Canterbury Uni) and how they deal with helmets, time etc

3. Bikes in stands at schools being vandalised at Mountain View High & Boys High
ACTION POINTS

Daniel to write a letter as a parent, to the Board of Trustees about the issue suggesting it is a disincentive to cycling and undoing the great work being done by Police Education Officers (PEOs) doing cycle training in schools, and that it is a solvable problem, i.e. where bike racks are located, security cameras, and other surveillance.
4. Adult Cycle Training next week (Advertisement attached) Tues 9 & Wed 10 Sept (5-7pm)

Squeaky Wheel to spend $200 on prizes ("aprons", need up to 12) as prizes to people participating.

Wendy will ring The Cyclery (Grant Hannam) to see what they have in stock and what price they can do these at.

Ron to pick these up on Wednesday.

Liz to attend Wednesday night session to present the prizes on behalf of SW and get a photo opportunity.

Jon to ring the radio station (OJ) to promote the course.

Ron to do newsstory for Thursday/Saturday?, around idea of parents/grandparents doing the cycle training to help reinforce cycle training undertaken by some/one? (Waimataitai School does do others?) schools, Adult Cycle training is complementary & supportive. Target of newstory: Grandparents/Parents with (grand)kids, and to help those who have lost confidence with on road cycling in traffic and have an old bike in the shed

Liz to assist with photos or ideas for photos for Timaru Herald Photographer, will approach Andrew Swallow (as he was a past Timaru Herald staff member now works for a National rural newspaper, he has children so may be willing to provide a photo of them and himself)

Fiona and Liz to do an add about the course for Timaru Herald to increase chances of publishing Ron's article. Send add to Daniel to place in Timaru Herald (TDC will pay for add).
5. Squeaky Wheel website
-CAN new website is going live soon.
-Squeaky Wheel will have webspace.

Jon will attend the Digital Hackfest day (3 October) to learn about the website and help set up the SW webspace.

7. Term Council Community Plan (LTCCP) Squeaky Wheel Wish List
Q) What cycling projects does SW want Council Staff to ask for funding?

Jon to draft list based on SW Annual Plan submission (to include requests under "Decisions sought" in relation to: Timaru Urban Projects List, Counting Cycling, Cycling Maps, Updating TDC Active Transport Strategy, Bike Parking (later long term plan after put in the initial bike stands as for item 1 above). Jon will the circulate it for comment to Squeaky Wheel Core (on website). SW will then present to TDC at meeting on September 17.

Fiona to draft the ECan LTCCP wish list based on the SW Annual Plan Submission (to include requests under "Decisions sought" for Bike Racks on Buses & Network of Cycling Routes Strategy) then circulate for comment to SW core.
