Job description- Independent Board Member

Requirements for serving as an Independent Member of CAN's Board

 

The Independent Board Members occupy an important supporting role within CAN. There will be one or two Independent Board Members, appointed directly by the other Board Members. Once appointed they will be full members of the Board and help CAN make productive decisions. 

These Members may have detailed knowledge of the cycling industry and/or the Government landscape relating to cycling, or other specialist expertise that CAN requires to pursue our goals, where they could act as the "voice" for that area, and/or a broad business and commercial acumen.

Skills in one or more of the following areas would also be desirable: not for profit sector; strategy; fundraising; lobbying; marketing; communications, and relationship management.

Role

Duties

  • Be familiar with CAN’s policies and procedures and ensure they are followed
  • Attend 4 quarterly 1/2 day-1 day CAN Board meetings, including the CAN-Do and AGM, in one of the five main cities
  • Commit to act as Board Member up to the next approaching AGM
  • Provide input into the overall direction and management for CAN
  • Must be a financial member of CAN
  • Consult with management staff on issues

  • A commitment to the vision, mission and values of CAN
  • Strong strategic thinking and leadership skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Understanding of the national cycling landscape; detailed knowledge of the cycling industry and Government intentions relating to cycling, where you might act as the 'voice' for that area
  • Not for Profit experience
  • A commercial perspective
  • Broad business and commercial acumen
  • Ideally also, skills in one or more of the following areas:  
    • not for profit sector
    • strategy 
    • fundraising
    • lobbying
    • marketing
    • communication
    • relationship management skills
  • Ideally, offering another perspective of cycling in New Zealand
  • Understands of the role of governance, ideally as proven governance experience

Time commitment

  • Attend 4 quarterly 1/2 day-1 day CAN Board meetings in one of the major cities (initially these may be convened by online conference call) 
 
  • Regional board members must be a member of CAN. 
  • Commit to 2-year cycle as Board Member to retain knowledge and build on the CAN Vision.
 
  • Attend the annual CAN DO (this will be followed by a board meeting)
  • Also from time to time attend special meetings, organisational functions, participate in working parties and direct inspections relating to organisational policies/practice.
  • The day-to-day commitment will vary during the year but might average 3-6 hours per week
