Submission on Seaview Road proposed speed limit reduction Hutt City Council

Cycle Aware Wellington supports the Council's proposal to improve pedestrian, cyclist and motorist safety on Seaview Rd by lowering the speed limit along this route to 50km/h.
In addition, we recommend the speed restriction is extended to Point Howard, a distance of less than 1km.

We would like the Council to consider the following points.

1. Lower speeds reduce both the likelihood and severity of crashes.

2. Lower speeds reduce he workload on heavy vehicle drivers. CAW runs Being Cycle Aware workshops with Wellington region bus drivers (http://can.org.nz/being-cycle-aware) It is a half-day facilitated road safety workshop, which aims to give participants an understanding of the issues that people cycling face every day. It also aims to give cyclists an understanding of issues facing bus drivers. We found that bus driving is a demanding occupation, and that lower speeds reduce the workload demands on the driver and thus reduce the likelihood of crashes.

3. It's a vote winner. Once speed has been reduced, it's hard to find anyone living or working in a 50 km/h area who wants it back at 70.

4. We note this proposal has support from local businesses, residents, and other cycling groups.
