Apologies:  Gaye

Matters arising:

  • Graeme still planning to contact CAN about sponsoring a NTCA stall at the Sustainable Living Fair
  • Agreed to skip the Critical Mass ride in Dec and re-advertise in Jan.  Some support for having weekly Critical Mass rides in Feb with specific destinations.
  • Train the Trainers Workshop (Wellington) - John Perry, Selwyn Brown, John Deans and Nathaniel are attending.  Rowan interested in attending and will check with Patrick to see if there is still room.

Bikewise Month:

  • Feb 22nd Street Party:
    • Devon Street Businesses will be encouraged to take part
    • Car parks to be used for stalls for community groups
    • Skid competitions, tricycle limbo, beauty pageant, bunny hop, bike maintenance workshop, bike and parts sell and swap, unicycles.
  • Filmmaking workshop (high schools)

  • Bicycle sculpture (Govett Brewster)
  • Lunchtime rides for business community (to explore urban commuter routes and off-road circuits as prelude to creating cycle maps).
  • Event at skate park
  • Rolo racing (spin racing)

Report from course on Fundamentals of Planning and Design for Cycling:

Approx. 10 attendees from all over the North Island, Nathaniel and Graeme attended along with Norm from Duffill Watts.  Good information with examples based on treatments that have worked in Christchurch.

Business cards (provided free by CAN for Bikewise Month):

Group agreed we want the folded card with the "green" design.  We will ask for 1,000.  Graeme will draft the wording and email it for feedback.

Nov CSIT Meeting:

  • Mangorei Road - NZTA came out to look at the problems cyclists have turning right.  NZTA's proposed solution is an underpass.  Nathaniel pointed out to them this solves the problem for kids cycling to school but not for adult cyclists commuting to work.  The NTCA preferred solution is bike boxes.  Following discussion of enforcement issues on Northgate near Girls High - cars parked in the bike lane despite the No Stopping sign - Nathaniel agreed to speak to enforcement.
  • Tukapa Street - NPDC plans to use a student to perform cycle count before green lane markings are trialed.
  • LTCCP - Nathaniel has seen the latest draft and there is a considerable increase (based on public feedback) for walking and cycling - specifically cycle infrastructure funding and some of the proposed upgrades of New Plymouth cycle ways.
  • NPDC has agreed to install solar powered tiles (for night time lighting) on the walking extension of the shared pathway to Bell Block
  • Study shows more than 60% of cars/trucks speeding on Devon and St Aubyn around Devon Intermediate.

Ridestrong:

New group under the umbrella of BikeNZ (revenue earning umbrella group over BMX, Cycling NZ etc - CAN withdrew from BikeNZ because they were spending money earmarked for advocacy on high performance cycling.

Next meeting - Wed Feb 4th 2009 5.30 pm 5th floor Atkinson Building
