Update on the Petone-Ngauranga project
Jo Draper of NZTA reported on the results of focus groups. They identified two groups of cyclists: regular commuters who currently ride the shoulder of SH2, and will probably continue to do so, and less confident riders who would be attracted to use a cycle path. Investigation will continue into 2013, though Jo notes:

  • The current SH2 is not "unsafe"
  • Upgrading the existing cycle path to 3m will be physically difficult.

More detailed results will be made available to participants and on the NZTA website. The methodology being developed may be used for other projects.

Another long commute
Reuben Ferguson showed pictures from his ride from London to Whanganui.

NZ Cycle Trails
Jonathan Kennett showed pictures from the new Kennett guidebook to NZ cycle trails. This includes a suggested 3000km route from Cape Reinga to Bluff - a new addition to your bucket list?

Heads up
A commemorative ride over the Rimutaka Rail Trail is planned for 9 February 2013.
