Big Coast MTB Fun Ride - Seeking Volunteers
The Hutt City Council is seeking volunteers to assist with the annual Big Coast two day mountain bike ride on the weekend of March 19-20. Volunteers are required for various non-riding and riding tasks including riding and course marshals.

The Big Coast is unique in NZ providing a fully supported, non-competitive, fun and social riding experience through some of the best scenery the wellington region has to offer, including coastal areas not open to the public.

As a volunteer you will get to experience and enjoy the Big Coast for yourself, including riding the course if you wish to do so. You will be provided with all meals and refreshments during the event and transport for your personal gear and camping equipment.

The Big Coast would not be possible without the passion and commitment made by volunteers. As a volunteer you will be at the heart of the event and contribute to the fun, social and supportive atmosphere that has become the hallmark of the Big Coast.

A little on the event - The Big Coast is not a race and is suitable for riders of intermediate fitness and beginner to intermediate levels of riding ability. The two day event covers approximately 50km each day with an over-night camp complete with a band for entertainment on the Saturday evening. Participants are fully supported with meals, refreshments and transport provided for personal gear and camping equipment.

The Big Coast starts at Te Marua (north of Upper Hutt) and follows the historic Rimutaka Rail Trail through to the Wairarapa. The ride then heads south along the western shore of Lake Wairarapa to the overnight camp. On day two the ride continues south around the spectacular coastline of Cape Palliser, Orongorongo Station, Turakirae Head, and Baring Head Lighthouse, to finish up in Eastbourne. The route utilises the Rimutaka Rail Trail, unsealed private farm and coastal roads, four wheel drive tracks, and quiet rural sealed roads.

If you would like to volunteer to assist with the event or discuss your possible involvement, please contact John Willmer - john.willmer@huttcity.govt.nz or call 021 599 102.

Kind regards,
