Petone - Thorndon cycle track

Petone - Thorndon cycle track

Forums:

Hi everyone, I'm back at cycle commuting after a decade, and totally new to Wellington.

I heard that there is a cycle track to Petone from Thorndon but that it wasn't finished near Petone and the road is really dangeous at that point too... I also heard that some work was done at Petone end to fence the rail line and seal a walkway/cycle track last Oct or so. Does this mean the cycle track is linked up or are all the maps from last year (showing the cycleway unfinished) still correct?

Thanks for any help

Hi Frederov,

There is a cycle track, but at the moment it is only sort-of reasonable to use when travelling from Petone to Thorndon - since if you use it in the opposite direction you have about 1 km or travelling in the opposite direction to traffic travelling at 100 km/hr. Many cyclists just bike on the shoulder of SH2 and ignore the cyclepath altogether - it is very uneven and often full of glass, so not comfortable when travelling at speed.  It does keep you separated from traffic, if not all the time....

There is a campaign under way to have a cycle path put in on the seaward side of the railway tracks, well separated from the road.  Go to www.greatharbourway.org.nz for more info... and good luck!
