Cycling Statistics

Cycling Statistics

Forums:

The following is the first of two posts I made in the Discuss Group which may be of interest:-

We are continuously hearing that cycling is " TOO DANGEROUS ".  Well I suggest those who say this look at the injury statistics.  When I have been told this my stock reply is,  'it's not as dangerous as cricket".  Yes there are nasty accidents
but there are in many activities, the most dangerous place being  our homes!

As it turns out cricket and cycling are about on a par. Excuse the pun but golf appears the safest activity with the Rugby Football codes "off the scale". Nobody minds skiing but it is three times more dangerous than cycling!

Whilst I was aware of these statistics an item in the Sunday Star Times  6 June 2010 about sporting injuries showed a table made up from ACC statistics attached.

Unfortunately ACC statistics are only reliable for types of injury and cost thereof because their brief excludes liability etc.
I believe their stats would include all cycling injuries as sporting injuries even when riding to the shops and so on which is unfortunate because stats for utility cycling, excluding the competitive and mountain biking, would show an even lower accident rate.

Perhaps these stats. should be pushed to promote cycling?

Unfortunately I was unable to load/paste the image which makes the words pointless! I therefore did not post my comments regarding the item the next day in the NZ Herald.  Both can be seen at CAA discuss
