CAN Bikes on Buses (BOB) Update

Forums:

There is a draft NZTA rule change to allow bike racks on buses as a result of a successful trial in Christchurch.  The attached update describes this trial and provides additional information such as FAQs, links to useful resources, and a few nifty videos showing how easy it is to use bike racks on buses.

Hi,

A work colleague sent me a link to the work that is going on with bikes on buses and the NZTA rule change. Although I'm highly unlikely to ever make use of the capability, I'm fully in support as I have seen first hand the difference a system like this can make.

My experience is from living in Ottawa for the last 14 months and having seen what the bus company there - OC Transpo (an Ottawa City owned company) does. All of their buses - including the articulated buses - have bike racks. The racks are pretty well used - and bear in mind that Ottawa is about as flat as (non-Port Hills) Christchurch!

Anyhow, my reason for sending this was to suggest that, if you want international experience on how bikes on buses works, I'd suggest you getting in touch with OC Transpo or the Ottawa City.

Hope this helps - and keep fighting the good fight!

Catch you later,
Craig
