Sorry I don't know my way round Auckland bikeshops. There ARE some nice compact bells around. I got asked to assemble 3 new Bauer mountain bikes a couple of years ago and they had some nice bell that were smaller than traditional. since they we're wanted where I was, three of the bikes at home now have them!

Thanks, Stephen, I'll certainly follow up on your Devonport link. I recently spent 10 days in Kyoto, where all ages ride bikes fairly sedately on the footpaths. An occasional warning from a bell prevents any collisions with pedestrians and all carries on very co-operatively. Having had my second misunderstanding with a walker on a shared cycle way in Auckland, I wonder if the Japanese level of communication is going to be possible in NZ ..I'll get a bell and see how it goes!

belatedly but....
The Chinese and Korean owned $2 shops which you'll find in all New Zealand cities are 'macho-free' zones and unashamedly display a variety of bicycle bells ( along with such things as good 'old fashioned' bicycle pumps ) .
Check out the video on my page here on how pedestrians can also use bicycle bells to great effect...

Thanks for the hint .. I'll check out the $2 dollar shops in Auckland .. Thinking of ditching my current ding-ding bell when I can find something with more of a throaty, resonant kerr-ching!! .. Like the Danish ones on those fancy Velorbis bikes that cost a squillion .. Will be in Kyoto again in April, so might even source a supply there (?) ... Really enjoyed those links to you-tube videos of cycling in Japan, by the way - thanks for those. And for your blog - Lee
