Council is proposing to adopt a Walking and Cycling Strategy.

At a meeting of Council held on 5 November 2008 a draft Walking and Cycling Strategy was adopted for

consultation purposes.

The New Zealand Transport Strategy 2008 prepared by the Ministry of Transport seeks to encourage walking and

cycling. A key target in the strategy is to see an increase in walking, cycling and other active modes to 30 percent

of total trips in urban areas by 2040.

The Horowhenua District Council Walking and Cycling Strategy is intended to contribute to the achievement of

such an increase.

The Strategy sets out Council’s aspirations for the promotion of walking and cycling within and through the

district for commuting to work or schools and for recreational purposes. Future investment of public funding for

footpaths, cycle ways and cycle paths must be in accordance with the strategy. Implementation of the projects

within the Strategy will be carried out through the Long Term Council Community Plan where funding decisions

are made following public consultation.

Submissions to assist Council in this consultation process are welcomed and must be received by 5.00 pm, 30

January 2009.

Submission forms, copies of the draft Strategy, and the Statement of Proposal are available at

www.horowhenua.govt.nz. These documents are also available at the Council Offices in Main Street, Foxton,

Plimmer Terrace, Shannon, or 126-148 Oxford Street, Levin. Copies may also be obtained by telephoning

Council’s Customer Service Centre, Levin, on (06) 366 0999.
