Communication for advocates: the basics of working with news media

Online seminar - 29 April, 4-5pm https://greenpeace.zoom.us/j/98343833524

Repeated at 2 May, 4-5pm

About Patrick Morgan
At Cycling Action Network we believe we're all better off when more people ride bikes, more often. People are happier, the air is cleaner, our streets are more pleasant, and our cities work better.

I work with our members, decision makers and the wider community to make New Zealand better for cycling. We've had some big wins (NZ Cycle Trails, and the $330m Urban Cycleways Programme) but there are too many headwinds. Bikelash is a thing.

My job includes serving our members, creating strategy, building relationships, leading campaigns, getting our messages into social and traditional media, and building our organisation.

In this workshop we'll cover

- media landscape and requirements
- what is news? News values
- framing your messages
- selling your story
- what to do when a reporter calls
- preparing sound bites
- interview skills
- avoiding traps

You will be invited to write and deliver sound bites relating to your advocacy.

Preparation
1. Look at the top three stories in today's news. Why are these the leading stories?
Who's voices make it into the story? Who is left out?
2. Write two sentences that summarise your campaign or activism.
3. Read “
