About CAN

CAN is New Zealand's national network of cycling advocates. We work with government and local authorities on behalf of cyclists, for a better cycling environment.

CAN aims to:

  • Promote the benefits of cycling
  • Improve safety for cyclists.
  • Encourage the creation of a good cycling environment.
  • Promote cycle tourism.
  • Advocate for integrated cycle planning.
  • Increase the number of cyclists on our roads

The Cycling Advocates' Network (CAN) was formed in 1997 as New Zealand's national network of cycling advocate groups. It is a voice for everyday cyclists - recreational, commuter and touring. CAN works with central government and local authorities, on behalf of cyclists, for a better cycling environment.

This website contains further information about CAN's aims and policies.

You can read about CAN's achievements here.

CAN has affiliated groups and individual members throughout the country, and links with overseas cycling organisations. In addition, many national, regional and local government authorities, transportation consultancies, and cycle industry businesses are supporting organisations. CAN's membership currently exceeds 5,000.

CAN works closely with the national advocacy organisation for pedestrians, Living Streets Aotearoa, and has strong links with organisations in the health, sport & recreation, transport, tourism and environmental sectors. CAN also works with BikeNZ (largely responsible for competitive and recreational cycling in NZ) and its constituent organisations for track/road/MTB/BMX cycling, BIANZ the cycle industry association, and the Bike Wise programme.

Websites of many of CAN's local groups and forums are hosted on this site, along with several special interest groups, including (you need to be a member of most of these groups for the links to work):
