A 2001 survey of injured cyclists examines the causes of cycle crashes in NZ, with an emphasis on the role of road features in these crashes. Two cycling crash patterns emerged from the study: crashes in urban areas occurred mainly when cyclists were using their bikes for transport; while crashes in 100km/h speed zones involved those using their bikes for sports training. The study makes recommendations for improving road conditions, and a better understanding of the nature and requirements of road riding for different user groups (e.g. for transport, leisure, sports, and younger cyclist).
