As promised, find a picture of a German example of bike transport on buses attached. It's pretty simple really:
Physical separation between seating area and pram/wheelchair/bike storage area.
This area is always located opposite the rear door for ease of access.
Seats mounted to the side of the bus wall that can be folded down.
A rail for the cyclists to hold onto whilst standing next to the bike
A sign informing patrons that cyclists can use the area.
That's it - no bike restraints or other gimmicks. If cyclists want to use the bus, they stand next to their bikes holding onto it. Plain, simple, and straightforward. I'm sure we can do that as well, can't we? :-) I would really like to see this happening for the Lyttelton service, as cyclists cannot get through the tunnel. I've copied some SPOKES people, Alix Newman and Cycling Advocates Network (CAN, Wellington), as they are interested in this topic as well. Have also sent a copy to Tim Hughes (LTSA). Could you please regard this as a submission to your route 28 review and forward it to the appropriate person?
