Island Bay Cycleway, Cycleway Development Programme Andy Foster (chair of WCC Transport and Urban Design Committee) brought us up to date. WCC is working on a Cycleway Development Programme (aka “Master Plan”) using an investment logic mapping process. James is involved in the workshop process, along with several Councillors, representatives of NZTA, and AA: safety and benefits of cycling. The Programme is initially concentrating on four routes: North, along the Hutt rd; West, to Karori; South, Island Bay to CBD; and East, Miramar/Kilbirnie. The Programme will go to Council for approval in April. Approval of the Island Bay Cycleway may happen at same time. Work is continuing on other stages of IB-CBD.

Johnsonville: changes to the “Johnsonville Triangle” involve shared paths and cycle lanes, James has been at consultation meetings.

Regional Land Transport Plan: Andy will be presenting a CAW submission, others are making personal submissions.

Chris Te'o spoke about USO, a group that use cycling to promote better health in Maori/pasifika. Video about the origin of the movement.

Road user workshops are happening on

Love to Ride campaign. CAN, along with Cycle Action Auckland and Auckland Transport, is involved with Love to Ride. The UK based programme encourages people to take up cycling, encouraged by social groups and prizes (a night in the South Coast “Keep”, anyone?)

Urban cycleways Programme. This $100M "programme" can be combined with other funding, eg state highway funding. Council funding, for cycling projects. WCC aims to have projects ready for the next round of funding.

NZTA is coming up with design guidelines for cycle routes (cf Christchurch Cycle Design Guidelines). They want quality and innovation, not “painted lanes in door zone”. NZTA is also interested in supporting trials. eg a Jervois Quay protected cycle lane.

CANDO, the national meeting of cycle advocates, is happening 28-29 March in Christchurch. There’s a post CANDO ride of the West Coast Wilderness Trail.

Ciclovia: the last of three Ciclovia, where the Miramar Peninsula between Scorching Bay and Shelly Bay will be motor free, happens Sunday 8 March. Frocks on Bikes postponed “Love to Roll” Valentines day event will also happen then.

Frocks on Bikes annual Frocknic will be happening on 14 March in the Wairarapa,

GWRC are holding a folding bike ride from Pukerua to Tawa - mainly off road, and mainly downhill!

Claire shared pictures and stories of her cycle tour in Cuba. Get there before the embargo goes, and Mcdonald's opens on the Malecon!

Raves:

Brian has noticed large numbers of cyclists on the Hutt Rd, indeed on all routes.

This is cordon count week, when WCC counts numbers of cyclists going through key points entering the CBD. Of course, we wouldn’t suggest you double back several times when you see someone with a clipboard on the roadside...

Webstock: James attended this IT event, along with manyof the kind of innovative people that Wellington is trying to attract. He noticed that there were lots of bikes parked at the venue.

Another GWRC Big Bike Fixup is happening in Newtown 14 March
