The gateway drug for walking, cycling and connecting communities.

"Open streets initiatives temporarily close streets to automobile traffic, so that people may use them for walking, bicycling, dancing, playing, and socializing."

Open Streets events are proving to be an effective tool for transforming cities. They are showing to have benefits ranging from improvements in public health to re-invigorating public space and promoting economic development to connecting communities and improving attitudes towards active transport (walking and cycling).

In the past year, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland have all held their first Open Streets events. Each had a unique purpose but all three attracted large crowds and revealed significant public demand for more.

With presentations from all three cities, this webinar is designed to share learnings from around the country. What were the successes, what were the challenges? Where does New Zealand see these events going in the future?

After recently attending the national Open Streets Summit in Los Angeles, Claire Pascoe will also present on the major learnings from North America, where over 100 cities are running Open Streets events.
