New road safety charity: Brake
http://www.brake.org.nz/
Brake exists for a simple reason - because every 30 seconds someone, somewhere in the world, is killed in a road crash. Road deaths and injuries, the misery they cause, and the pollution of our planet by vehicles, is a shameful global epidemic that must end.
On average, at least one person dies every day on New Zealand roads alone, and about 40 more are injured - a national disgrace in a country with such a small population. None of these crashes is an accident. They all have causes that can be prevented.
We believe that governments can do much more to stop the deaths. But we also believe individuals, schools, communities, and companies can make a real difference too. Our priority is to stamp out dangerous driving and unnecessary use of vehicles that plagues communities, spreading fear, and causing death and injury.
We believe people whose lives have been devastated by a death or serious injury on the road are the forgotten victims, and need expert and sensitive support to give them the best chance of recovery. We provide this support.
Brake NZ is a not-for-profit New Zealand Trust and part of the Brake Charity, an international charity funded by donations from individuals, companies, and grant givers.

campaigning advice e.g. how to run a speed survey, surveying the community on local needs
media strategy
support for victims
funding advice
capacity building e.g organising a walking school bus
Mary suggested we form a coalition of organisations with an interest in improved road safety and agree on a few key messages.
She noted the death rate in NZ is twice that of UK.
Sample message: "Why do we have to sacrifice a child before we get change?"
Focus is on risk reduction.
Not a mass membership organisation.
Funding via corporates and contracts.
A independent voice for road safety.
